Terlingua
Legendary as the site of the original Chili Cookoff and the namesake for Caroll Shelby's Terlingua Racing Team, this is pretty much the end of the earth to most people. And that's fine with the natives.
There's a real live Ghost Town and an abandoned mercury mine, plus a still functioning ghost town cemetery, if you want to stay forever.
It's quirky, but worth the trip, with a populaton of cerfified characters. Obscure but Texas-elegant restaurants and crusty western bars abound. It will be hot, even in winter. In spring and fall it will be very hot. In summer, it's damn hot.
