Fort Davis
Fort Davis is both a town and an actual fort. In fact, it's the home of the last U.S. Cavalry fort -- and it's still here!
The town of Fort Davis grew up around the fort, also called Fort Davis, and even today looks just like a West Texas town should look.

Nestled in the scenic Davis mountains, this colorful town is made of Texas history. Named for Jefferson Davis, it served as a main stop on the fabled Overland Trail for travelers riding between San Antonio and El Paso.
There are an assortment of frontier themed modern shops, and even an old fashioned soda fountain that helps to beat the heat.
For the size of the town, Fort Davis has a lot of interesting things to do for the intrepid visitor, and the surrounding countryside is spectacular and teeming with wildlife. There are facilities for horseback riding, camping, and such.
Just up the road is the world famous MacDonald Observatory, where visitors are welcomed into a modern, informative, and entertaining visitors center. There are frequent "Star Parties" at night that offer insights into the skies above.
The Indian Lodge campground is well worth a visit, too, on your way up the hill.
