About Alpine
Alpine is the unofficial capital of the Big Bend, and is considered by many to be the center of the universe.
We offer relaxation and adventure, cowboys and artists, restaurants and galleries -- plus a smattering of local characters who will make you smile.

Shopping is eclectic and full of surprises. From cowboy fashion to handmade pottery and you'll find lots of antiques, both old and new.
The food in Alpine is generally American, with some welcome exceptions, and ranges from quick to fancy. The barbecue is perfect.
Local art varies widely, from arcane stuff you can't understand to wickedly cool things you can't live without.

If you're looking for entertainment or local events, on any given weekend you may find a rodeo, cowboy poetry readings, revivals, football games, Gallery Night, fireworks, square dances, lots of parades, and a real by God professional baseball team called the Big Bend Cowboys (Continental League). Or, you may just want to settle for a quiet walk and an ice cream cone. That's okay, too.
Local activities include horseback riding, karate, fishing, strumming a guitar, birdwatching, hunting, sculpture, biking, concerts, outdoor theatre, golf, and canyon rafting. And, yes, we have belly dancers.

The Big Bend area offers a variety of parks, the MacDonald Observatory, a cavalry fort, the Chinati Foundation, great museums, Sul Ross University, the Marfa Lights, several ghost towns, the Rio Grande, a beer drinking goat, TWO international chili cookoffs, and the gateway to Mexico. You'll see wildlife galore, from javelinas to eagles, because this -- as the song says -- is where the deer and the antelope play.

Bring your camper, your horse, your motorcycle, or all three, for day trips to neighboring towns that offer authentic glimpses into the heart of Texas history: Fort Davis, Marathon, Marfa, Terlingua, and Lajitas.
After your visit to Alpine, you'll be going home with lots of stories...
